Grace Unending

Good day dear friends! I pray your week and weekend went well.

I’m not sure if I mentioned that my husband and I love music. Together we are in a few different music groups. I sing and my husband plays drums and sings, as well. For our secular bands, we will be having a quiet time as all band members will be busy preparing for the upcoming Christmas season. Our gigs are now done until the new year.

Do you ever listen to the words of songs? As a vocalist, the words of a song are the most meaningful part of the song. They tell a story, state a point, pass on history, release emotions, and the list goes on and on. However, I have learned that many people get caught up in the beat or instrumentation of music that they become complacent towards the lyrics in the songs they listen to. There is one particular song that we play, which the story that is told, although sounding very ‘churchy’, has a line that is heart breaking to me, because it is the truth for so many people and their faithlife.

Let’s top up our coffee’s and I’ll explain… (oh, and may I encourage you to begin listening to the lyrics of songs, if you don’t already.)

Grace Unending

[Jesus said,] “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

The band that my husband and I are in plays new country cover songs. One song we sing is called My Church by Maren Morris. It basically is about how a person finds peace when driving her car with the radio playing. It really is no different than when a person finds peace at the lake or in seeing a sunset. I have even known a person say he finds peace when hunting; waiting in absolute quiet and still as he waits for his prey. In any case, they are all means by which people turn to find a sense of peace.

In the song, however, there is a line that states, “I’ve cussed on a Sunday. I’ve cheated and I’ve lied. I’ve fallen down from grace, a few too many times.” This phrase is often the truth to why many people try to find peace through other means than simply through Jesus, the Prince of Peace. They feel they have just done so many sinful acts that they are not worthy of forgiveness or that they have too many sins to be forgiven, as if God has a numerical limit on the number of sins he can forgive in us. Please know there is no sin bad enough, no number of sins too numerous that can keep God from forgiving you and granting you His peace. He knows your sin; there is no hiding it from Him. Take all your sin and guilt and shame to Him in a prayer of repentance, and let Him lift it from you and replace it with a peace that passes all understanding and a joy in your heart that overflows. In so doing you are laying on Him your burden, and taking up His load of love, joy, peace, hope and faith to follow Him, which is much lighter than the burden of unresolved sin.

Although a sunset, music, the lapping of waves, or whatever else you may find peaceful, are wonderfully beautiful and powerful things, place them where they deserve to be; as gifts and blessings from God by which we can extend our thanks for such beauty. But in all cases, when it comes to attaining peace from our sin, turn to the only one who can grant you true everlasting peace and lay on Him all your burdens, cares, and shame. He is always willing and waiting, wanting and seeking to forgive and renew your soul.

Prayer: Dear Prince of Peace, help me to know and trust that there is no sin too great for you to forgive. Although at times I may seek to go to a special place to seek peace, may it only be to be able to seek You and to rest in Your beauty and peace. Dear Lord, thank-you for such beautiful, peaceful, soul reaching activities like sunsets, lapping waves, music, and___________! Help me to appreciate these things as gifts from You for my pleasure. You are an awesome God! Thank-you for your care and grace! In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN!

Reflection:

  1. If you have a sin or burden that you have been clinging to, for whatever reason, give it to the Lord today. Acknowledge it before Him and… Let it go!! He desires you to live in peace.
  2. Is there a place or activity where you feel at peace; where it seems to reach to your soul? Think on it and why you believe it has such an effect on you. If possible, over the next couple of days, take the opportunity to enjoy such activity. Then, thank God for the blessing of this activity in your life.
