Proverbs – God’s practical guide to a joyful life

Devotion 24

Good day friends! I pray your week and weekend went well.

Let’s top up our coffees and rest in Solomon’s words for us this week….

Proverbs 8:1-21

Wisdom’s Call

Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; beside the gate leading into the city, at the entrance, she cries aloud: “To you, O people, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind. You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, set your hearts on it. Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right. My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness. All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse. To the discerning all of them are right;  they are upright to those who have found knowledge. Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. “I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power. By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full.

I remember as a little girl being completely wrapped up in my Mom’s arms in her big cozy, all enveloping arm chair. It was such a safe and peaceful place, especially in those moments where I was frightened or sad. I knew when I was there that all would be good; she was my protection and I was loved. Can you envision a person in your life that made you feel that way; that while in their arms you were safe and all the concerns of your life could just melt away? If not, close your eyes and envision being wrapped up in the most loving arms and being held close to one’s chest, where all your cares can be dispelled and you can fully rest in peace.

It’s this complete rest and peace that God gives us when we seek him. In him, we are completely surrounded by truth, righteousness, justice, love, good counsel and sound judgement with complete insight of what is happening in and around our lives. In him there is no wicked or hateful behaviour. In our most gracious God, who has given us complete access to knowing him through his Word and through our most precious Saviour, we can come to him and let go of all our cares, no matter how deep and troublesome, and he will carry us through them, if we let him. For he promises, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” (Proverbs 8:17) and Jesus himself calls, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) These are not empty words of the world, but promises that we can cling to when we allow our Lord to wrap us in his most welcoming arms and let His words of wisdom, forgiveness, peace and  love wash over us and renew us. Let go and let Him hold you today.

Prayer: Dear Lord, my life is filled with so many demands and burdens, some very exciting and some fearful. Sometimes it is so overwhelming, and even the blessings I have trouble enjoying. Envelope me in your arms today and throughout this week. Keep my body, soul, and mind at peace in knowing you are watching over me and are leading me in what this week brings. By the help of your Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts to seek your will and ways. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN!
